A witness to an armed robbery followed a vehicle Wednesday night. Police were called and three people arrested after gunshots were fired at the witness.
Police have released the name of a man fatally shot by an officer Wednesday.
Dane Garrett Scott Jr., 18, of Del City, was shot following a police pursuit and a crash.
Police Capt. Jody Suit said Del City police are continuing to investigate the incident.
“Right now it appears to be a justifiable homicide,” Suit said.
The chase started about 2 p.m. Wednesday in a Del City neighborhood when an officer attempted to pull over a vehicle with three people inside. Scott, the driver, nearly hit the officer's car head-on and fled the scene, Suit said.
After a 10- to 12-minute pursuit, the vehicle hit a tractor-trailer rig and crashed near Interstate 35 and SE 15 in Oklahoma City, Suit said.
The driver tried to leave the accident scene and fought with the officer over a gun the driver had, Suit said.
“There was a scuffle with the officer and the suspect. In the course, the officer fired several rounds,” Suit said. “He (Scott) was able to jump up and run 70 or 80 yards before he fell down.”
Suit did not release the officer's name Thursday morning. The officer is on routine paid administrative leave.
Officers recovered the handgun from the scene and determined Scott was shot once, Suit said.
Scott has criminal history as a juvenile, he said.
Scott was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead, Suit said. Information on the two passengers has not been released.
